Before you start: whose account?

Everything below depends on one decision: the child's iPhone runs a child Apple ID inside your Family Sharing group — not your account, and not an unmanaged account of their own. Your account on their phone means your messages and photos appear on it; their own free-standing account means the controls can be removed. The child account in your family is the only arrangement where limits genuinely hold.

Step 1 — Create the child's Apple ID (10 minutes)

On your iPhone: Settings → [your name] → Family Sharing → Add Member → Create Child Account. Use their real birth date — the age drives the defaults Apple applies. Apple will ask you to verify you are an adult with a small card check or existing payment method.

Step 2 — Sign their iPhone in and update it

On the child's phone, sign in with the new child Apple ID, then install any waiting iOS update (Settings → General → Software Update) — parental features improve version by version, and an out-of-date phone is the one that misbehaves.

Step 3 — Turn on Screen Time from YOUR phone (15 minutes)

On your phone: Settings → Screen Time → [child's name]. Turn it on and set a Screen Time passcode the child does not know. Then work down the list: Downtime for nights, App Limits for games and social apps, Communication Limits for who can reach them, and Content & Privacy Restrictions for web filtering and age ratings. Step 4 — Require your approval for every download

In Family Sharing, make sure Ask to Buy is on. Every app install and purchase then pings your phone for a yes or no. This is the single highest-value switch on the list: it means nothing new arrives on the phone without you seeing it.

Step 5 — Location, found-phone and payments

Turn on Find My sharing for the family so a lost phone (or a late child) is findable. Check Settings → Wallet — a child's phone does not need a payment card. And in Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy → Location Services, make sure the child cannot silently switch location off if your family relies on it.

Step 6 — Add the pieces Apple doesn't cover (10 minutes)

Screen Time has no "pause everything now" button, no school-hours schedule, and no way for the child to reach you once the phone is locked down. Step 7 — The handover conversation (the step that makes the rest work)

Hand the phone over with the rules said out loud: what's limited and why, where the phone sleeps, and the standing promise that showing you something upsetting will never get them in trouble. Write the rules on the fridge if you have to. Software holds the line; the conversation is why the line is respected.
