Why year 7 is when it starts
Everyone arrives with a phone at once, and the class sorts itself into chats faster than into friendship groups: the official class chat, the real class chat without the teacher's favourites, the five-a-side chat, the one made at 11pm to talk about someone. A group chat is a playground with no supervisor and no home time — which is why the rules have to live in your child, not in an app.
Five rules that families actually keep
1. Screenshots are forever. Anything typed can be photographed and passed on, stripped of its joke. The test before sending: would you be fine with the teacher, the grandparent and the person it's about all reading it? Children find this rule easy to accept because they've already seen it happen to someone.
2. Leaving is always allowed. Children stay in horrible chats because leaving looks loud. Agree in advance: you can leave any chat, any time, and if anyone asks why, «my parents make me clear old chats» is an approved excuse. Give them the line — blaming you is a gift that costs you nothing.
3. Nothing about a person who isn't in the chat. The nastiest chats are the ones built to discuss someone. Being in one — even silently — is taking part. This is the rule that asks courage of a child, so pair it with rule 2: the easy exit.
4. Chats sleep at night. The 1am pile-on happens because everyone is tired, unsupervised and performing for each other. A phone that sleeps outside the bedroom ends your child's part in it without a single argument about content — the bedtime guide is the how.
5. Showing you is never grassing. The promise that makes every other rule work: if you show me something bad, my first move is to help, not to confiscate. Children hide things from parents who react by taking the phone — because to a twelve-year-old, losing the phone is the punishment, even when they were the victim.
When a chat turns on your child
Save the evidence (screenshots, with dates), leave calmly, block, and tell the school — schools deal with group-chat fallout weekly and take it seriously. Our WhatsApp bullying guide covers the full playbook, including when it stops being bullying and becomes a police matter. If your child is wobbling, Childline is 0800 1111 — free, confidential, and sometimes an outside voice lands where a parent's can't.
What an app can honestly do here — and what it can't
Be suspicious of any product that claims to «monitor your child's chats». On an iPhone, no app can read another app's messages — at all; anyone claiming otherwise on iOS is misleading you. On Android, with the child's knowledge and consent, Safeinest's message safety checks incoming notifications on the phone itself for signs of bullying, self-harm and sexual content, and sends the parent the category and a few redacted words — never the conversation, which never leaves the child's phone. It is a smoke alarm, not a transcript: it tells you when to walk in and talk. The talk is still yours.
Preguntas frecuentes
Should I read my child's group chats?
Routinely, no — covert reading teaches hiding, and there are thousands of messages of nothing. Openly, sometimes: agree at phone-handover that you may sit down and look together when something feels wrong. What works day-to-day is an open-door habit plus, on Android, consent-based message safety that flags categories of trouble without handing you the conversation.
Is there an app that can read my child's WhatsApp on iPhone?
No. Apple does not allow any app to read another app's messages on an iPhone, full stop — products implying otherwise are misleading you. On Android, apps can (with the child's consent) check incoming notifications for warning signs, which is how Safeinest's message safety works.
When should my child leave a group chat?
The moment it exists to be cruel about someone, keeps them up at night, or makes them feel worse every time it pings. Agree the exit in advance and hand them the excuse — «my parents make me clear old chats» — so leaving is one quiet tap instead of a public statement.
What if my child is the one being unkind in the chat?
It happens in most groups eventually — audiences make children perform. Stay calm, have them delete the message and apologise personally (not in the group), and talk about the pile-on effect: ten mild comments read as one cruel wall to the person receiving them. A consequence that teaches beats one that humiliates.
