Parents' guide — Honor & Huawei

Honor or Huawei parental controls without Google Play (2026)

Honor and Huawei phones are the one case where "just install Family Link" may not work, because many ship without the Google Play Store. This guide shows the single check that decides everything, the exact free settings for each path, and where a paired app like Safeinest can and cannot help.

The short answer

Before anything else, find out whether the phone has the Google Play Store. Newer Honor phones (2021 onward) have it, so Google Family Link and normal Android apps work as usual. Most Huawei phones made since 2019 do not have it — they use Huawei's own AppGallery — so Family Link will not run, and you lean on Huawei's built-in Digital Balance instead.

First, the one check that decides everything

Honor split from Huawei in late 2020. Since then the two behave very differently, so check your phone rather than trusting the brand name.

What Honor and Huawei give you for free

Both brands have their own built-in tools. They are worth knowing, but each has a clear limit.

None of these send a report to your own phone, and none watch messages for bullying, grooming or self-harm words. For that you need Family Link (if you have Play) or a paired app.

Step by step: the path for your phone

Do this once, with your child beside you, so nothing is hidden.

Path A — an Honor (or any of these phones) with Google Play

  1. Update the phone. Go to Settings → System & updates → Software update and install any update, so the menus match yours.
  2. Install Family Link. Get Google Family Link from the Play Store on your phone, and sign the child in with a child Google account on their phone.
  3. Set the rules. In Family Link approve installs, set a daily limit, add a bedtime and lock the device when needed. See our full guide to how to use Google Family Link.
  4. Add a paired app for the rest. Install a safety app on both phones and link them. On the child's phone grant usage access, notification access (for message safety) and device admin (for the removal lock). Every switch is visible to the child.
  5. Stop the phone killing the app. In Settings → Battery → App launch, find each control app, turn off "Manage automatically", and switch all three (auto-launch, secondary launch, run in background) on. Skip this and bedtime rules may not fire.

Path B — a Huawei with no Google Play

  1. Use Digital Balance as your base. Open Settings → Digital Balance, turn it on, set a PIN only you know, then add screen time, app limits and a bedtime.
  2. Set up Kids Corner if a younger child uses the phone, choosing only the apps they may open.
  3. Lock down AppGallery. In AppGallery's settings, switch on its parental or kids controls so new installs need your approval.
  4. Add a paired app from AppGallery or a direct download. Family Link will not run here, but an Android safety app still can. Check safeinest.com for the current link rather than assuming it is in AppGallery, then install it and grant the same permissions as above.
  5. Block at the router too. Because tools are thinner without Play, it helps to block websites on your home Wi-Fi router as a second layer.

Where the free tools stop

Digital Balance and Kids Corner live on that one phone only. They show you nothing from your side, give no location, and do not read messages for harmful words. Family Link, where it runs, is strong on apps and screen time but also cannot read messages, and a child aged 13 or over can ask to end its supervision. The approach is much like other Android skins — see our Xiaomi and Redmi guide for the shared battery traps.

Where Safeinest helps — and where it cannot

Because Honor and Huawei phones run Android, Safeinest can do things an iPhone will not allow. These on-device features do not need Google Play, so they work on a Google-free Huawei as well.

What it cannot do: no tool is perfect, and a determined teenager can still find gaps. On an iPhone no app can read messages at all, so detection is an Android-only strength. To install on a Huawei without Play, get the app from AppGallery or a direct download — check safeinest.com for the current link. Safeinest costs the local 99 — 99p, ₨99, ₹99 or ৳99 — a month.

The numbers

Some context, from named sources. The no-Google-Play world is large: China alone has 230 million under-18s online, on phones with no Google Play (CNNIC). Across our biggest Android markets the figures are around 96% in India, 94% in Pakistan and 94% in Bangladesh (World Population Review and StatCounter, 2024–2025), where Honor and Huawei sell strongly, and the first connected device now arrives between ages 7 and 11 (Ofcom, 2025). For bullying, 1 in 6 children aged 11–15 in Europe and Canada has been cyberbullied (WHO/Europe HBSC study, 2024), rising to 85% of children aged 10–18 in India (McAfee, 2022).

What to say to your child

Keep it short and warm. You could try: "I have set some limits on your phone, and I will show you exactly what they are — nothing is hidden. It is not that I do not trust you. Part of my job is keeping you safe while you learn." Then show them the settings, so they can see what is on.

If you need help now

If your child is in danger, act first. In the UK, Childline is free on 0800 1111, the NSPCC helpline is 0808 800 5000, and in an emergency call 999. Outside the UK, call your local emergency number or your country's child helpline.

Common questions

does my Huawei phone have Google Play

Most Huawei phones made since 2019 — the Mate 30 and later — do not have Google Play. They ship with Huawei's own AppGallery instead, and the newest run HarmonyOS. To check, swipe through your apps: the coloured Play Store triangle means you have Google services; only AppGallery means you do not. That one check decides your setup path.

does Google Family Link work on Huawei

Usually not. Google Family Link needs Google Play Services, and most Huawei phones from 2019 onward ship without them, so Family Link cannot be installed or run normally. On those phones use Huawei's built-in Digital Balance, Kids Corner and AppGallery controls instead, and add an Android safety app from AppGallery or a direct download for message safety and location.

does Family Link work on Honor

On newer Honor phones, yes. Honor split from Huawei in late 2020, and Honor phones from 2021 onward — the Honor 50, the Magic series and later — ship with Google Play again, so Family Link works like on any Android phone. Older Honor phones made while Honor was part of Huawei may lack Google Play, so check for the Play Store icon first.

what is Digital Balance on Huawei and Honor

Digital Balance is the built-in screen-time tool on Huawei and Honor phones. In Settings, Digital Balance, you can see usage, set app limits, add a bedtime and protect it with a PIN. It is useful for building habits, but it works on that one phone only, shows you nothing from your side, and does not watch messages for harmful words.

how do I set parental controls without Google Play

Start with the phone's own tools. Open Settings, Digital Balance, set a PIN and add screen time, app limits and a bedtime. Set up Kids Corner for a young child, and turn on AppGallery's parental controls so new installs need approval. Then add an Android safety app from AppGallery or a direct download for message safety and location, and consider blocking sites at your router too.

can I install Safeinest on a Huawei without Google Play

Yes. Safeinest is an Android app, and its on-device features do not depend on Google Play, so it can run on a Google-free Huawei. Because it will not come from the Play Store, get it from Huawei's AppGallery or a direct download instead. Check safeinest.com for the current link rather than assuming where it lives, then install it and grant the usage, notification and device-admin permissions.

does Safeinest work on Honor

Yes. Honor phones run Android, so Safeinest works fully: message-safety alerts, app pausing, bedtime and school hours, live location, safe zones, family calls and an SOS button. On a newer Honor with Google Play you install it from the Play Store as normal. Unlike on an iPhone, it can check messages for harmful words on the device, with the child's consent screen showing what is switched on.

what is Kids Corner on Huawei

Kids Corner, also called KidsSpace, is Huawei's built-in kids mode. It creates a separate space with only the apps you choose and its own time limits, so a young child can borrow the phone without reaching everything else. It is handy for little ones, but it is a mode on that single phone — it sends no report to your phone and does not watch messages — so older children need stronger tools.

why does my parental app keep stopping on Honor or Huawei

Both brands close background apps to save battery, which can stop control apps running, so bedtime rules never fire. To fix it, go to Settings, Battery, App launch, find each control app, turn off Manage automatically, and switch auto-launch, secondary launch and run in background all on. After that it stays alive in the background. Always test with a short bedtime first.

can my child turn off parental controls on these phones

They can try. A paired app like Safeinest offers a removal lock through device admin so it cannot be quietly uninstalled, and Digital Balance can sit behind a PIN only you know. But no tool is perfect: a determined teen can find gaps, and a child aged 13 or over can ask to end Family Link supervision. Being open about what is switched on is the best defence.
