Safeinest vs Qustodio (2026): phones, laptops and the price
Qustodio is an established parental-control company with a free tier and six platforms, laptops included. Safeinest is a phone app made in the UK for families in 177 countries. This page sets the two side by side, including the places where Qustodio is simply the better answer.
The short answer
Qustodio is for the parent who needs one tool across phones and computers, including Windows, macOS, Chromebook and Kindle, and who is happy to pay once a year. Safeinest is for the parent whose worry lives on a phone, who wants message-safety alerts on Android, family calls and location with safe zones, and who would rather pay the local 99 figure each month than an annual bill in pounds.

Where Safeinest is the better fit
If what worries you is the message a child is being sent, rather than how long they sit at a laptop, the two products point in different directions. On Android, Safeinest's message-safety alerts read words in messages and notifications on the device, with a consent screen the child sees, and raise a flag on self-harm, bullying and grooming language. Qustodio's Complete plan goes the other way on Android: it logs calls and SMS and watches YouTube searches and social feeds, through an app you install from their own site rather than from Google Play. That is a record of the conversation for you to read. Safeinest reads the words on the device as they arrive and raises a flag on the dangerous ones, rather than handing you the whole conversation. Decide which of those you actually want, because it is the difference that matters most.
- Family calls and SOS. In-app voice calls with no phone number, family messages and an SOS button, ringing on a locked phone. Qustodio has a panic button on Android child phones that sends an alert with location to trusted contacts; what it does not have is a call you can make to the child through the app.
- Location with meaning. A 24-hour trail, safe zones, no-go areas that warn you when a child enters them, and an arrival alert if they are not home or at school on time.
- Languages and countries. 14 languages and 177 countries, against 9 site languages and no published country count.
- How you pay. A small monthly amount in your own currency instead of an annual card charge, which matters more in some households than any feature on this page.
The one thing we will not dress up: our alerts read English today. Local-language detection is being worked on, and until it ships we would rather you knew. Everything that is true on each phone is listed on our features page.
Where Qustodio is the better fit
There is a clear case for Qustodio, and pretending otherwise would only waste your evening.
- Computers. Qustodio covers Windows, macOS, Chromebook and Kindle as well as phones. Safeinest is a phone app for Android and iPhone. If the homework laptop is where the trouble happens, we are no use to you and they are.
- A real free tier. Qustodio has a free level for one device. Safeinest has no free plan, only a small monthly price.
- Published research. Qustodio publishes an annual research report, which is more than most companies in this category manage, and it is worth reading whichever app you end up buying.
- One tool, six platforms. For a family with children on laptops, tablets and phones, a single bill and a single dashboard is a genuine advantage.
If your children are on phones only, the comparison narrows to alerts, calls, location, languages and price. If a laptop is in the picture, the honest answer may not be us. Either way, set the free tools on the phone up properly first, using our guide to parental controls on an iPhone, and see our page on Safeinest and Bark if you are weighing up monitoring apps as well.
What each one costs
Read from the UK, Qustodio shows a free tier for one device, Basic at £43.95 a year for five devices and Complete at £75.95 a year for unlimited family devices. Safeinest is monthly: Little Nest at 99p a month for up to three child devices, which is £11.88 a year, Family Nest at £1.49 for up to seven, which is £17.88 a year, and Mega Nest at £1.99 for unlimited devices, which is £23.88 a year. Outside the UK the same numerals appear in your own currency, the local 99 figure, in all 177 countries. Neither company charges per device inside its top plan, and neither sells paid extras once you are on a plan.
What neither of them can do
Neither app reads messages on an iPhone. Apple gives no app access to iMessage, WhatsApp, Snapchat or Instagram messages, which means no self-harm alert, no bullying alert and no grooming alert can work on a child's iPhone, from Qustodio, from us or from any app you will ever find in the App Store. On an iPhone the real options are limits, downtime, location, family calls and Apple's own picture warnings, and they are worth setting up tonight. Word-level detection lives on Android, on both sides of this comparison, and a parent choosing a phone for a worried reason should weigh that up before the shop, not after.
Common questions
Does Qustodio have a free version?
Yes. Qustodio offers a free tier covering one device, alongside its paid plans. Safeinest has no free plan; it charges a small monthly amount instead, the local 99 figure in your own currency. If price is the deciding factor and you only need to cover one device, the free Qustodio tier is a reasonable place to start.
How much is Qustodio in the UK?
Read from the UK, Qustodio Basic is £43.95 a year for five devices and Complete is £75.95 a year for unlimited family devices, with a free tier for one device below them. Safeinest is monthly instead: 99p, £1.49 or £1.99 a month, which works out at roughly £12, £18 or £24 a year.
Does Qustodio work on a Windows laptop?
Yes. Qustodio covers Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, Chromebook and Kindle, which is the widest platform list among the apps we compare ourselves with. Safeinest is a phone app for Android and iPhone only. If your child spends the evening on a laptop rather than a phone, that one difference decides the whole question.
Which one warns me about self-harm words?
Safeinest raises message-safety alerts on Android for self-harm, bullying and grooming words in messages and notifications, read on the device with a consent screen the child sees. Qustodio's Complete plan logs calls and SMS and monitors YouTube and social feeds on Android, so you can read what was said, but its site does not state an alert for those words; the reading is left to you.
Is Safeinest cheaper than Qustodio?
On UK prices, yes. The Safeinest unlimited plan is £1.99 a month, about £24 a year, against Qustodio Complete at £75.95 a year for unlimited devices. Qustodio also has something we do not: a free tier for one device. So the cheapest option overall is theirs, and the cheapest paid option is ours.
Does Safeinest work on a laptop or a Kindle?
No. Safeinest runs on Android phones and iPhones. There is no Windows, macOS, Chromebook or Kindle version, and we would rather say so than let you pay and find out. For laptops and Kindles, Qustodio covers all four platforms, and Google Family Link covers supervised Chromebooks at no cost at all.
How many children does each plan cover?
Safeinest counts devices: Little Nest covers up to three child devices, Family Nest up to seven and Mega Nest as many as you have. Qustodio counts devices too, with five on Basic and unlimited family devices on Complete, and one device on its free tier. Count the tablets as well as the phones before you choose a plan.
Do the message alerts work in Urdu or Hindi?
Not yet. The Safeinest app itself speaks 14 languages, Urdu and Hindi included, so the menus, the alerts and the guide read naturally. The message-safety detection, though, reads English today. Local-language detection is being worked on, and we will change this page the day it ships rather than quietly implying more than is true.
Which should I choose if my child has an iPhone?
Either can set limits on an iPhone, and neither can read messages there, so choose on everything else. Safeinest adds family calls, an SOS button, safe zones, no-go areas and arrival alerts on an iPhone. Qustodio adds laptops and a free tier; its call and SMS logs and its panic button are Android-only. If the iPhone is the only device in question, compare those two lists directly.
